Paris Vs. Scarlett: or, people re-hash the madonna/whore syndrome

Ok, the picture of her with the dog is TOO CUTE. Had to use it.Aw, she is so ~pritty~

It seems like when the subject of celebrities and STD’s comes up, it’s usually thrown at a “slutty” celeb for being “nasty”. In fact, that’s where people start to vent their real feelings and (often untrue) assumptions about people with STD’s. Because nasty people get STD’s, and if you get an STD, you’re nasty. Circular reasoning strikes again. A quick google search of “celebrity std’s” just seems to bring up sites where celebrities are trashed for being so “slutty”-even this story on The Insider throws charges at 10 celebrities who have not publicly confirmed their condition. And the point is that they don’t have to, cuz it is not anybody’s business which celebrities have STD’s, unless, that is, you’re having sex with that celebrity. I know the Internet doesn’t represent everybody’s opinion, but sometimes the response is so overwhelming that you have to take notice. If you just read the comments on pages like this you’ll get the gist of how someone just assumed(not even CONFIRMED) to have some sort of STD is treated. I’m not really here to argue whether anybody has an STD or not. I’m just analyzing the reactions and the stigma-because the fact of the matter is that there’s no way to know unless they tell you. That’s the point here, right?

It seems like the celeb that really gets the brunt of the STD trash talk is Paris Hilton. Oh, poor Paris. :( She gets a bad rap all across the board, but the awful things that people say about her-especially in relation to the rumor that she has herpes(which, it seems like people on the Internet can’t stop mentioning the “fact” that ol’ Paris has it).  One blogger says that “I knew Paris carried so many STDs that there were some that doctors had never seen before”.  Oh really? You knew? Because you think she’s a whore? Yep. This guy says that she’s the “uncontested slut of all sluts” and that “1 in 4teenage girls has an STD here in America. Doctors call this number overwhelming since it involves nearly half the teens who’ve tried sex. Any guess as to what could’ve caused so much innocence lost to herpes and gonorrhea? If you guessed Paris Hilton, yes”. Okay, sure, she had a sex video a zillion years ago. And we know a LOT about her(well, that’s her career-to be famous for being herself). She’s probably not the best role model for young teen girls-but it’s funny how people see that as an excuse to condemn her to evil whoredom. I don’t think people who are calling Paris Hilton a slut and a whore are great role models for teen girls, either. If you wanna take it there.

And yet, in contrast, there is Scarlett-a celebrity we hardly ever see plastered on tabloid covers. She seems to lay pretty low. Which means absolutely nothing-her career isn’t based on getting a ton of weird paparazzi attention the way that Paris’s is. It seems like because we know less about her sex life, she’s not a whore, and according to this site, we can rest assured that ScarJo’s pussy is perfect and wonderful like newly driven snow. That’s what the author says-“I can rest soundly knowing that Scarlett is not a Valtrex user”.  Nice.

So, here’s what I learned from trolling around on Google today: if you are a whore, you have STD’s. And if you are not a whore, you’re all good!!!! Immune, even!!!

Yeah, right. The fact of the matter is that there is a world full of people out there who have had sex with tons of people and still haven’t gotten any STD’s. And there is also a world of people who have been infected who may not have had sex with more than one person. The correlation between promiscuity and likeliness of having an STD simply isn’t there-sorry, folks. It seems to me like some of the stigma and conversation surrounding STI’s goes hand in hand with slut-bashing; sluts get bashed, sluts have STI’s, STI’s get bashed. Same old story as always. And curiously enough, when I did troll around to see what people have to say about celebrities with STI’s, most of the names mentioned are women’s-not men’s. Hm. Just sayin’!
